Little Failure

Gary Shteyngart's memoir was a very interesting and utterly confusing read. I had never before read a memoir and finished it. I was really captured by the first chapter which included a picture of the author sitting on his desk with a hilarious caption. I loved the fact that his dark humor continued throughout the book. It made the memoir seem a little easier to read and much more fun and interesting. As the memoir progresses so does the seriousness behind his dark humor. As he gets to the high school years the author starts to realize that he will never be able to please his parents and become a successful lawyer.  Throughout this process he adds dark humor to lighten up the mood when in reality it was a very serious part of his life. I absolutely loved Gary's humor and I literally Laughed Out Loud to the captions. What did you guys think?
One thing that confused me while I was reading this memoir was the collision of the past and the present. The author would go from past to present and vice versa a couple of times in ONE chapter. This caused me to become frustrated with the reading because as I was trying to focus on one specific part of his life, he jumps to the present and includes another totally different situation that had occurred. Did this confuse you guys as well? or is it just me?
Overall I enjoyed this read but I will admit that it became a little tedious and felt like a chore at times. I think this is a good choice of non-fiction to get you ready for more difficult reads in this genre.

  1. Isn't it a little ironic that he would use dark humor to lighten up his mood?

    1. I guess.... Since he was depressed... makes sense now really ...

  2. That's what a lot of comedy is, depressed laughing at pain because it's something that everyone shares in common. Pain doesn't discriminate.
