Fun Home: A Family Tragiccomic by Alison Bechdel

In this comic we read chapter 3 which consisted of Bechdel finding out that her father had died and dealing with the mourning process whilst telling stories and experiences that she's had with her father. I had never read a comic that was nonfiction before so it was a weird experience at first.  It is a tragedy and a comedy at the same time which I find extremely interesting as well as funny. Bechdel is very sarcastic in certain scenes throughout the chapter, and while I, the reader, know that her father had died and that is a very upsetting thing I cannot control my laughter. The facial expressions of the characters throughout the chapter are amusing and extremely entertaining. We get certain expressions that will not do the character justice if it was written like a normal memoir, Bechdel also takes the reader on her journey to finding out that she is a lesbian. The comic drawings serve as a way to explain to the reader how Bechdel came about realizing that she is in fact a lesbian. We see drawings of many books and her little trips to the library and the bookstore and we know that she is trying to find out the definition of a lesbian. Overall I think this was an interesting tragicomic and I enjoyed reading it and laughing my way through the chapter.
